Afghan Hounds are extremely old “sight hound dog breed”.

Appearance

They can be easily recognized by their fine, silky and thick coat. Afghan hounds are brindle and black. They are also famous by the names of Shalgar hound, Barutzy Hound, Baluchi hound, orKabul hound. They weigh about forty five to sixty pounds and their height is around twenty four to twenty nine inches. The coat of Afghan hounds can be of any color. Some of them are of white color; however particolor hounds aren’t (hounds with islands of black or red) acceptable and can be an indication of impure breeding. The long and fine-textured coat needs considerable grooming and care. The special small rings on the tail’s end as well as the high hipbones are some of the important characteristics of Afghan hounds.

Temperament

Their temperament is usually dignified and apart from the others; however while playing it changes into becoming clownish and happy. Cat-like tendencies are common in an Afghan hound

Health

The average lifespan of an afghan hound is about twelve years. Aging, cardiac and urologic problems are some of the causes that lead to their death. Cancer and allergies are some of the health issues that an afghan hound comes across.

History

This breed of dog has originated from Great Britain (1920).
